Even though they’re rivals, Megumin has always worried about Yunyun. For starters, she’s like the weirdest person in the Crimson Magic Clan. And secondly, she doesn’t seem to have any friends! If only they weren’t rivals, huh? Anyway, Yunyun has recently made two new friends! That’s great..but also very suspicious. Something doesn’t seem quite right. Megumin investigates and discovers that her supposed friends, Dodonko and Funifura, are actually just using her. How dare they! Only Megumin is allowed to manipulate Yunyun! Anyway, Funifura borrowed some money from Yunyun to help her sick brother. Is that all? What she needs isn’t money but rather a potion. Out of the kindness of her heart, Megumin decides to make a homemade potion. An adorable Duxion lost its life in the process. What’s a Duxion? It’s basically a Farfetch’d but cuter. She only needed its leek for the potion but when she found out that defeating one gives her a ton of EXP, well, you can figure out the rest. Megumin gives Funifura the potion and gets back Yunyun’s money. What a good friend! Er, I mean rival.
After Megumin returns Yunyun’s money to her, they both have a nice chat about their future plans. Megumin reveals to her that she’s going to learn Explosion magic and shares the story behind it. She’s also planning on going on a journey soon. Yunyun is totally going to miss her but she’ll never admit that! By the way, another adorable Duxion loses its life during this conversation. Megumin just can’t resist that EXP! I don’t blame her. In an unfortunate turn of events, they notice a whole bunch of evil spirits flying in the sky. It’s too dangerous to be outside and Megumin invites Yunyun to spend the night at her home. However, when they get there, they notice that the door has been knocked down and that Komekko is missing! Where could she have gone!? Well, we already know she’s been sneaking out of the house to help Host solve the puzzle that would release Wolbach’s seal. Granted, she doesn’t know that. She’s just in it for the food! Still, Komekko is probably to blame for those evil spirits outside. She’s truly the most devilish little sister of the Crimson Magic Clan! Eventually, Megumin figures this out herself and rushes to find her little sister. Yunyun goes with her.
They manage to find her but she’s surrounded by monsters! Yikes! She’s also holding Shadow (which is the dumb name that Yunyun gave Chomusuke) who seems to be attracting them. What should they do? Megumin doesn’t see any other choice but to use her skill points to learn some magic. She hesitates because she’s so close to having enough skill points to learn Explosion magic. But this is to save Kommeko! Before she can waste any of her skill points though, Yunyun uses her own to learn intermediate magic like lightning and fireball to defeat a few of the monsters. She knows how much Megumin wants to learn Explosion magic and sacrificed her own skill points to keep her dream alive. D’aww. Yunyun, you’re awesome. You’re also a good friend…I mean rival. But Yunyun’s newly found magic isn’t enough! There are just too many monsters! It’s then that Megumin realizes that defeating the Duxions earlier gave her enough skill points to learn Explosion magic! Aww, yeah! You better believe that she learned it immediately and annihilated all of the monsters with EXPLOSION!!! Now that’s the Megumin we all know and love. All’s well that ends well, at least for now.
Megumin and Yunyun have both graduated from school. Megumin plans to go on an adventure and find the woman who taught her Explosion magic. Being an adventurer costs money though and she isn’t exactly rolling in dough. It also doesn’t help that she can’t seem to find a job. Thus, every night, Megumin decides to let out her frustrations by unleashing her Explosion magic. Gotta let it out, ya know? Unfortunately, the blast it creates causes an annoyingly loud sound and the villagers keep complaining about it. Yunyun is tasked with finding the culprit and she already suspects that it totally has to be Megumin. Well, that’s rude! What makes her think that it isn’t some other wizard that knows Explosion magic? Okay, even I admit that sounded silly. Megumin explains the situation to her and admits that she’s at the end of her rope. She might have to start selling her body! Oh my! The potion shop owner said he’d love to have Megumin. It’s her first time and she’s nervous but she’ll just close her eyes and endure! Yunyun vows to burn that potion shop down, right now! Who knew that the potion shop owner was such a huge pervert? By the way, Megumin mentions that he just wanted her to help him test out some potions, haha. Yunyun has such a lewd mind! Anyway, Yunyun decides to help Megumin find a job.
They both take on a few odd jobs and make a little bit of money. It’s not a lot but it’s better than nothing at least. After a long day of hard work, Megumin convinces Yunyun to let her unleash her frustrations via Explosion magic. Yunyun regrets that decision almost immediately. The explosion angers a Fire Drake and it chases the girls! Yunyun freezes it eventually but they’re spotted by Bukkororii of the Anti-Demon King Squad. Megumin lies and says that they just came face-to-face with the Explosion Demon! She’s the one responsible for those explosions that everyone is complaining about. Also, she’s got horns and a hot body! Bukkororii believes her story and promises to be on the lookout for that sexy demon! Safe! Speaking of demons with horns and hot bodies though, there’s one waiting for Megumin at her house. Well, that’s a weird coincidence. She’s here to retrieve Chomusuke who she refers to as Wolbach-sama. Megumin would never hand over her precious familiar. The busty demon offers her a ton of money and Megumin gladly accepts, haha. Money talks! However, Chomusuke doesn’t want to go with the demon. When it becomes clear that she’s not going to give her Chomusuke, the demon prepares to attack Megumin and Yunyun. Unfortunately for her, the loud racket alerts the Anti-Demon King Squad. They see her and realize that she fits Megumin’s description of the Explosion Demon perfectly! They all attack her and she’s forced to retreat. You gotta love it when a plan comes together.
With the money that the demon left behind, Megumin decides to head out on her adventure. All of her former classmates see her off and present her with gifts. Dodonko and Funifura give her an awesome staff. Arue gives her a cool-looking eyepatch. And finally, Yunyun gifts her some stylish robes. Megumin is ready to take on the world! Of course, I can’t forget to talk about Komekko’s side story. Host returns and Komekko tells him that the adults defeated Wolbach. Say what!? Yup, she’s gone. Well, dang. Now what? Host believes her physical body may have been destroyed but she’s still out there somewhere. He decides to go on a journey to find her. This makes Komekko sad. They’ve been having a lot of fun together! Host tells her to grow up and become a great wizard. Someday, if he hasn’t found Wolbach, he’ll be glad to be her familiar. It’s a deal! I really want to see this happen.
Another fun volume from this Konosuba spin-off series centered around Megumin. We got to witness the first time that she ever used her Explosion magic! It was great. EXPLOSION! Rest in peace you adorable Duxions that made this possible. Her rivalry with Yunyun still makes me smile. They’re such good friends! Oh, I mean rivals. They’re such good rivals! They’re totally not friends. They also make a solid comedic duo. However, the best duo is still Komekko and Host. Their side story continues to be my favorite part of this series. Sadly, I think it’s over. I’m actually quite bummed about that. I wanted to see more Komekko and Host! Anyway, Megumin has finally begun her adventure to find the woman who taught her Explosion magic. What shenanigans will she get into on the way? I can’t wait to find out!
