Viz Media Schedules First ‘InuYasha’ Blu-ray Anime Set

It may be time to finally retire the dozens of DVD singles you have...

With some ups and downs on the streaming side recently for this property, fans of InuYasha talked last spring about bringing out the show on Blu-ray last fall, though that didn’t. The series was released previously as single DVD releases that were an average of three episodes per disc, so this’ll be a deal no matter what.

Now, they’ve scheduled the first set with a July 14th, 2020 debut where it’ll have the first 27 episodes of the series and include the clean opening and closing along with an interview with the Japanese scriptwriter. The set will be priced at $39.99 and will be spread across four discs in 1080p in its original full frame aspect ratio.

We do want to put a caveat out there that may be a sticking point for some until we actually get our hands on the release or some other confirmation. As Zhou mentions here, the Spanish Blu-ray releases (which were upscaled) were missing some of the opening theme songs as the rights were unavailable. This is likely to be the case with Viz’s release as well as I believe the same issue cropped up with the streaming side of the series.

Plot concept: Fifteen-year-old schoolgirl Kagome Higurashi, whose family tends a shrine, falls into an old well one day and literally tumbles into ancient Japanese history. On the other side she meets Inu yasha, the dog-like demon (inu means dog in Japanese) who claims she smells just like the woman who fifty years ago pinned him with her arrow to a tree, where he’s been all this time.

Unwilling allies at first, the two become closer as their search for the sacred “Jewel of Four Souls” continues. If Kagome really is the reincarnation of the shrine-maiden Kikyo, can it be that she’s becoming jealous of herself…?
