Originally serialized in Comic Kairakuten BEAST from the March 2020 installment, Delusion Attack is a twenty-page story from creator Nicoby, who has three other works on the service. While I go through a lot of chapters from creators that I’ve come to enjoy I make sure to pick up random and newer creators when I can so that there’s some freshness to my pull list for the notifications. Nicoby caught my eye since it was listed as a volleyball chapter and there’s some obvious fun there but it also has some mild yuri leanings that it doesn’t engage with but teases nicely. And that’s something that’s definitely fun, making me wish it has a follow-up chapter with a double swinging date for our lead characters and their friend.
The focus is on Ayase, a pretty solid volleyball player who has some real skill and some real curves and bounce to her. She’s got a huge crush on the boys team captain Jinnou but she can’t bring herself to actually ask him out since she’s so down on herself. Enough so that it frustrates her bets friend Kana, who with the way she talks and says things about Kana you’d be forgiven if you thought she had a crush on Ayase. And Ayase seems to be aware of that as time goes by, so it’s not something that she was encouraging or discouraging, just being aware of which is a nice touch. Ayase is content to just let it all be a dream, at least until she has to retrieve the ball from the girls’ court that ended up over on the boys and she’s right up against him. And then gets taken out by an errant volleyball.
The chapter really torments us as we get Kana trying to wake her in the nurse’s office and it feels like we’re going to go full yuri here but it’s just a tease and instead we get Kana announcing Ayase’s confession, not realizing Jinno was there as well. And Ayase, so intent on pleasing and keeping things status quo, does her best to just distract Jinno and decides that the best thing she can do is help to get rid of his erection. This has all the usual elements of a first-time situation but there’s a kind of innocence about it as Jinno doesn’t get all aggressive, neither of them are miracle workers with it, and there’s some nice concern for each other as they keep trying things. One imagines growing up in Japan that the nurses’s office is a big fantasy location for many so a story like this plays to it nicely and could invoke some welcome nostalgia.
In Summary
Nicoby puts a lot into the twenty pages here as there’s a good bit of story, some scene changes, and an engaging first-time experience. All while having some teasing of yuri material along the way. We get to know the characters as well as you can in this space and they’re all likable and fun and you’d easily want to see more of this moved forward as well. The volleyball side is cute and sets things up well, the humor used throughout definitely made me smile, and most importantly Nicoby has some fantastic artwork. I’m definitely adding them to my to-watch list and keeping an eye out for new material from them. It’s beautiful and has the story and character writing material to back up the visuals.
