The TV season is moving right along and with some shows wrapping up and others coming on for the first time, there’s a whole lot of choice in general. You can check our piece about what new premieres are out this week here. We’re enjoying a lot of the usual sitcoms but have fallen behind on the dramas thanks to a lot of busy family events. But we’ve got a couple of shows we’re keeping up on and I’m enjoying doing coverage of the final season of The Clone Wars. We’ve got the season opener reviewed here.
We wrapped up with the finale on Harley Quinn and we’re continuing our weekly look at Star Trek: Picard. We also did reviews of the finale of See as well as the finale for The Mandalorian.
While I’m getting ready to start in on Devs as I’m a huge Alex Garland fan and I want to get a couple more episodes of Dispatches from Nowhere in the bin before I start watching, I spent most of this past week watching Chernobyl. I did this with just one episode per night in order to let the weight of each episode and what it wanted to tell really sink in. I know I’m “late to the game” this one, but it was a powerful experience. I remember vividly the fear many had when the incident happened and the not knowing the truth – and then only hearing the lies for so long – but revisiting in the here and now is fascinating because of the things it tells. And just the additional context of knowing so much more about the location these days since it was in Ukraine whereas back then we only called it the Soviet Union or Russia. The cast is strong throughout and it had two of my favorite actors in the lead with Stellan Skarsgaard and Jared Holt, so it made for an educational but engaging series that expanded my understanding of events in dramatized form.
While keeping up on the sitcoms and the like otherwise, including burning through more of the third season of New Girl, I also caught up on Riverdale which was fun as the show just seems to be getting even nuttier. I was also really pleased to finish my second viewing of the second season of Star Trek: Discovery as my mother had gotten hooked on it and we’d been binging the back half in batches of it this week. I’m still surprised by how quickly it’s become one of her favorite Trek shows.
What’s occupying your TV time these days?
