Spielberg Departs Fifth ‘Indiana Jones’ Film

2 min read

Indiana JonesIt’s hard to believe but it was back in 2016 when Disney announced the start of development for the fifth Indiana Jones film. I don’t think anyone expected it to move fast but here we are almost five years later and now we’ve got things happening with it. That new thing is that director Steven Spielberg is stepping back from directing it and will stay on as a producer. Interestingly, it’s looking like James Mangold is in talks to take on the film, which with a solid line of films from Fox in the last few years, has him with the greater chance of getting it if he really wants it. His work on Logan is definitely something that’ll be eyed to how this could be done and the studio liked the acclaim that Ford v. Ferrari got recently.

The film was given a July 9th, 2021 release date previously but we expect that to be fluid with a directorial change in the mix, which means script rewrites and other changes.

“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019,” said Alan Horn, Chairman said back in 2016, The Walt Disney Studios in a statement. “It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”

The four existing films have made over $2 billion at the box office worldwide and quite a good penny over the years through merchandise, rides, books, games and home video releases.

The film will be produced by Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy, and Frank Marshall. Harrison Ford will star.
