Olivia Liang Boards The CW ‘Kung Fu’ Series Reboot

2 min read

The CW announced last fall plans to try and revive the 70s Kung Fu series that has a number of familiar faces involved in it from the production side. On the casting side, the first news has landed that has revealed Olivia Lang taking on the leading role. Lang has been in another CW series recently with Legacies. She joins Tzi Ma and Kheng Hua Tan as her parents, as well as Jon Prasida, Shannon Dang and Eddie Liu in undisclosed roles.

The hourlong drama comes from the people behind the Blindspot series with writer-executive producer Christina M. Kim, creator-executive producer Martin Gero, executive producers Greg Berlanti & Sarah Schechter and Warner Bros. TV. Berlanti Prods. has most of their shows setup at The CW but have a few elsewhere as well.

The new series is working from the inspiration of the original with Christina M. Kim set to write it.

Interestingly, something we’ve seen come up a couple of times in the last few years at various studios, the project had two different writers working on it to try and crack it from different directions. That was done at Fox with Berlanti Productions behind it with Warner Bros. TV but neither of them went along far enough.

Plot Concept: A quarter-life crisis causes a young Chinese-American woman to drop out of college and go on a life-changing journey to an isolated monastery in China. But when she returns to find her hometown overrun with crime and corruption, she uses her martial arts skills and Shaolin values to protect her community and bring criminals to justice…all while searching for the assassin who killed her Shaolin mentor and is now targeting her.
