GKIDS is digging into more of their library to work with Shout! Factory as they’re going to work with a new edition for Ponyo for a home video release. The distributor has set a May 12th, 2020 release date for a new limited edition steelbook that will be priced at $26.99. It’ll include a booklet, the original Japanese storyboards, the original TV spots and trailers, and the English behind the microphone special, essentially replicating past releases in terms of the disc itself. The steelbook aspect itself is the new thing – which I’m mixed on as I was really enjoying the larger box set versions they were doing last year.
The 2008 feature film was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki with character designs by Katsuya Kondo. The Japanese cast includes Hiroki Doi as Sōsuke, Yuria Nana as Ponyo, George Tokoro as Fujimoto, Tomoko Yamaguchi as Risa, Akiko Yano as Ponyo’s sisters, Emi Hiraoka as Kumiko, Kazuko Yoshiyuki as Toki, Kazushige Nagashima as Kōichi, Rumi Hiiragi as Young Mother, Tomoko Naraoka as Yoshie, and Yūki Amami as Guranmanmare.
The English cast includes Frankie Jonas as Sosuke, Noah Cyrus as Ponyo, Cate Blanchett as Granmamare, Liam Neeson as Fujimoto, Tina Fey as Lisa, Betty White as Noriko, Cloris Leachman as Yoshie, Janessa Rose as Kumiko, Kurt Knutsson as The Newscaster, Lily Tomlin as Toki, and Matt Damon as Koichi.
Plot Concept: A young boy, Sōsuke, befriends a strange looking goldfish whom he names Ponyo. Unbeknownst to Sōsuke, Ponyo is a magic fish who has decided that she wants to live with Sōsuke and the other humans. Unfortunately, Ponyo’s decision to give up her underwater life creates a crack in an ancient magic spell, and places the world in danger. Together, Sōsuke and Ponyo must set things right.
