Originally serialized in Comic Kairakuten from the June 2017 installment, Color Rendering is an eighteen-page story from creator Ikuhana Niiro, who has about two dozen other works on the service. This marks my first experience with them as it’s one that came up kind of randomly but appealed as the teaser image and office lady tag told me we’re getting some good adult action. I did not expect what I ended up getting here and really fell in love with Niiro’s work. There’s something really special to the character artwork here that gives it a distinct look but it’s also what we get for so many wonderful backgrounds that sell the story. And there is a story here as this relationship gets underway which is what makes the whole thing so incredibly effective.
Initially taking place at a wedding, we’re introduced to the office lady Ootaka and fellow salaryman Narumi. She’s all done up well for the wedding and that’s a surprise to him. Which is reinforced at work the next day as he starts talking to her about how she’s so cool and proper here compared to the updo, earrings, and sheer dress she had at the wedding. That has her asking if she’d be better taking his suggestions, which has her removing glasses, taking her hair down, and so forth, almost revealing a different person. It’s a great little moment even as Narumi realizes he’s erred here but she makes it clear she values his opinion and has been wanting it – and him. The fact that she takes him out to dinner and at a love hotel for the night drives that point home more than anything else, especially with as elegant as she looks.
There’s a lot of dialogue to the encounter as they transition to the bed because of her personality, being somewhat cool and detached in a way, and it’s not so much that Narumi brings her to life or anything. She’s a highly sexual creature as we see her reveal some gorgeously illustrated lingerie and as she reveals some of her experience. Everything is sensitive and Narumi is able to take advantage of that much to her pleasure. It’s got a slow and sultry design about it so that even when things do get a bit more intense it still has that aura about it so that you really do feel these two connecting and exploring each other for the first time, understanding how they work. It’s an incredibly heightened experience, especially with how Niiro’s artwork brings her expressions to life and the simple things like hair design and her outfit, giving it a lot of wonderful intimacy and intricacy.
In Summary
While I’ve been going through a lot of hentai lately and exploring different artists, only a small handful really make a big impact on me, even of those that I end up following. Ikuhana Niiro is definitely moving to the top of my list very fast based on this chapter and I’m excited to start digging into more of what they have on the service. It’s got a great story, some interesting characters, absolutely beautiful design work throughout, and achieves that level of eroticism that very few stories manage to do. It’s rich in just about every way and I’m hopeful that it’s not just a one-off in Niiro’s catalog because I want so much more like this.
