What They Say
Yumeno Yumemite has a plan to use her idol stardom to gain more votes in the student council election, but will the sudden entrance of a Hollywood Starlet put a huge dent in her plan, or push it forward?
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Amazingly, one of the Momobami kids is a famous Japanese actress that has made a name for herself in Hollywood. Making it to Hollywood is Yumemi’s dream, with the idol thing only being a stepping stone. So it isn’t too surprising to learn that the Hollywood actress, Kawaru Natari, is also Yumemi’s favorite actress and one she wants to emulate.
When Kawaru challenges Yumeko to a match, Yumemi forces her way into things. This way the match will be based on acting but with Yumeko and Yumemi making a team against Kawaru, they should have a fighting chance. On one hand, having Yumemi on her team should help because one would think Yumemi will do anything to defeat Kawaru and prove herself to those around them. On the other hand, I could easily see Yumemi becoming so starstruck of her idol that she faulters and costs Yumeko everything.
Only one way to find out!
From a singing contest to a contest of eating spiked cookies, it all leads to the final deadly round of Soixante-Trois! Yeah, I’ve never heard of it either. Essentially, it is a card game where the three players draw a card and put it down after telling everyone how much the card is worth. You can lie or tell the truth (act) about the true value. The key is not to go over 63. So, after a few rounds, the player has the chance to draw or pass. The root of it all means that Yumeko and Yumemi should have a massive upper hand. But given that their partnership fizzled after the last round, Kawaru suddenly has the advantage once again.
Can Yumeko’s gambling skills help her out-act Kawaru and Yumemi
In Summary:
Most of the secondary characters in Kakegurui are plenty interesting in their own right. However, this volume focuses on Yumemi the idol and she is a fairly boring character to me. Her backstory and character development are done well, but I just don’t find her interesting. So, the only thing that saves much of this volume for me is Yumeko’s involvement in their team up against one of the Momobami family members who happen to be internationally known for her acting. She also happens to be Yumemi’s favorite actress and that obsession might just cost Yumeko’s presence in the election race. If Yumeko can’t pull off a win, can she at least walk away with some election chips so she isn’t out of the race completely?
