The summer 2019 anime adaptation of the Mao-sama, Retry! light novels has Funimation handling the streaming for it with both a simulcast and a simuldub out there for the property. They’re now giving it some expanded distribution which happened a little under the radar recently with it being added to Hulu here. The addition has it with both subbed and dubbed forms on it, making it accessible to audiences pretty well.
The series is directed by Hiroshi Kimura based on the series composition by Oka Tanisaki. Makoto Iino is handling the character designs with EKACHI EPILKA handling the animation production.
The Japanese cast includes Kenjiro Tsuda as Hakuto Kunai, Kanon Takao as Aku, Kaori Ishihara as Luna Elegant, Hitomi Nabatame as Mikan, Sora Tokui as Yukikaze, Showtaro Morikubo as Zero Kirisame, Yurika Kubo as Momo, Kazusa Aranami as Kyon, Suzuna Kinoshita as Toron, Chiyo Ōsaki as Mink, M.A.O as Organ, and Tomokazu Seki as Isami Tahara.
The series comes from creator Kurone Kanzaki which has had an online presence in 2016 but began print publication and distribution by Futabasha in 2017 with three volumes out for it so far. A manga adaptation also got underway with two volumes out to date.
Plot Concept: The series deals with Akira Ōno, a regular guy who works at a company that manages an online game. He often plays the game as his character “Maō” (Dark Lord). But one day, when he logs on, he is whisked into the game’s fantasy world as his character. There, he meets a one-legged girl and begins his adventures alongside her. But as he is a powerful “Dark Lord,” various nations and holy maidens journey to defeat him, and he stirs up trouble everywhere he goes.
