What They Say
It’s summer break, and Mugi and the gang are spending it at the beach. Mugi has made up his mind to finally tell Yuu how he feels about her, but it’s not an easy task. Luckily (or maybe unluckily), Mugi’s best pal, Kazuki, is there for support. Kazuki enters Mugi and Yuu in the Best Couple Contest in hopes of putting them in the mood. But Mugi and Yuu end up with more than they bargained for!
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Everyone is still at the beach working at the snack shop owned by Kazuki’s aunt. Mugi still has not told Yuu he loves her and his friends are completely fed up with his lack of balls. In fact, Mako tells him he should grow some balls and then show them to her. Mako is such a great character.
Mugi is a good guy, and he unwittingly makes himself look good in Yuu’s eyes when he refuses to kiss her. To win a beach contest they have to kiss and prove they are the best couple, but Mugi refuses to have his first kiss with Yuu under those circumstances. It is a stand up thing to do, but if he doesn’t get off his butt someone else is going to swoop in and steal Yuu. The contest announcer punishes the two of them by dropping them on a desert island for a night. Their time on the island makes this volume a worthwhile read. They have fun together, show how much they mean to each other without saying anything, and make a deep connection in such a romantic way that even I sighed. After finding a pretty clamshell on the beach, Yuu wants the other half but decides finding it would be impossible. Mugi agrees and then looks down and finds the other half of the shell right at his feet. Yuu insists he keep his half so they both have something to remember their summer by, freaking cute.
Things seem to be running at an all time high for Mugi and Yuu. That is until Kiku shows up again. She is still really cute, but her attitude is a lot different than when Mugi turned down her love. Kiku still wants Mugi and she isn’t afraid to play dirty to get him. When Mugi mentions the change in her personality, she admits she became a more detached person after he turned her down. Ouch. Will she be able to destroy any chance Mugi may still have with Yuu? Does Kiku really still love Mugi, or is she just out for revenge? I don’t know the answers to these questions, but what I do know is that I love this series.
