Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
I had a really good time with the opening installment of this book even though I got the sense that it was really only going to go so far with its concept. Seely and Beattie covered a lot of ground focusing on past and present for this so we could get the best of both worlds while also introducing us to these characters. As it progressed it definitely connected better and the second installment is a much smoother read. It’s also a fun book to just look at with Rebekah Isaacs again putting in a lot of great material and fun as our crew faces danger, weird aliens, and a little time being intimate. While we get some naked scenes that are carefully laid out, the reality is that we’re likely to not get a lot of full-on material. I wasn’t expecting hentai but I’ll admit I was hoping for a few more risks being taken to establish the book.

The past side is proving to be a lot of fun as we get to see the team coming up with Little Shot, the recording robot that will beam everything back. We also get some time with the group going over the history of porn, which is important to understand so they know what they’re going to be shooting and where it all came from. But we also get Chris putting together a date-plan for everyone to spend time with each other in different configurations so they shed all the inhibitions and issues. That naturally leaves some of the guys feeling weird about it all but that’s to be dealt with later. What happens instead is that Chris and Omar end up breaking the rules and spending a night together, which has her realizing they can never be like that again because of just how much she cares. The downside of porn is discovering just how possessive you are of your own lovers.

In the present, we saw our porn-explorers have found themselves captured and in a bad place with the species that they’re dealing with. Amusingly, Chris and Omar get thrown into life and death combat with some creature which they have no hope of defeating if not for microbes in their mouths since diseases can spread quickly and easily. This causes the two groups to be split and while the rest start to make friends with some intriguing locals, Chris and Omar begin to understand the fragility of this world because of natural disasters of the past that turned them from engaging in sex for fun to it being for species survival. You can see how the pair and the rest could turn this around and help the species get back to the good stuff for the fun of it but there have to be a few challenges first, of course.

In Summary:
Money Shot hits a couple of sweet spots for me even if it’s struggling to be softcore material when you get down to it. I love the concept and the silliness of it but also just the embrace of things sexual, since so many play coy and won’t really commit to it. The creative team here definitely feels like they’re having a lot of fun with this and it’s got a really great sense of playfulness in the artwork. The tame nature may frustrate me a bit but hopefully this either expands as it progresses and they find their groove or we get another series that takes a few more chances and goes a bit further. Either way, this is a really enjoyable book.
