Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
I missed out on the third issue of this series and it looks like a few things changed while I was gone. Which is good as it shows David Andry is interested in expanding the story and scope of this world and not just playing in a small area. There are some interesting expansions going on here to be sure as well. Thankfully, Alejandro Aragon is still producing some great looking pages here and the expansion is to his benefit as well with more places to work with and more variety to dig into, which has its pros and cons. But there’s something to be said for not having to draw the same background or item over and over again. With several storylines running here, variety is the keyword.

Paxton’s journey now has him on an island with a few others, including Honcho who has claimed ownership of it. There are some pretty nasty folks on there as well and he sees how Paxton and his skills can be useful – as well as his companion as he learns she’s actually a doctor as well. While we don’t see his full setup here we do see how he controls the place and the power that he has over them. What’s interesting is that he also tells Paxton he has a way to handle the Waves here, though it’s more about keeping everyone bound and under his control, letting them attack each other amid it. Paxton’s luck has not been great since he left his kids in search of medicine but he’s ended so far away from them at this point – and so quickly – that it’s like a whirlwind.

Elijah, having made a friend in the woods with Ty, heads to meet up with him in the territory he’s from and that’s definitely an interesting experience. They’ve got a sizable area and plenty of community aspects to it which has Elijah really excited, especially when Ty’s parents give him a good dose of food and even some dessert. We do get a heavy religious aspect here with the sermonizing that they do, claiming that this is part of how they deal with handling the Waves when they come through, but we don’t quite get to that point here. It’s got plenty of cult aspects to it that it certainly would leave most wary unless in dire need. It’s also a nice contrast to the smaller story going on back at the cabin with Bec doing her best to handle things as a Wave has come through and there are bears afoot. It’s not deep but more about setting up what’s to come.

In Summary:
I really enjoy Resonant with what it does overall and in the smaller corners. Andry keeps things moving and expanding so that it doesn’t feel like it’s just rolling around in the same spot constantly. With three main plotlines unfolding in different areas we also see more ways in which people live and exist. It’s got a lot going for it there while Aragon’s artwork breathes some great life into it. There’s a rawness and roughness to it that’s appealing and the color work from Wordie helps to bind it all together into something even bigger. The action side is minimal but it has a really great dynamic element to it and in general, I just love the character designs and the overall world design.
