There's always a chance for more anime.

Sekai Ichi HatsukoiNorth American fins finally got a home video release back in 2017 when Funimation brought out their first boys-love title with Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi – The World’s Greatest First Love. We learned back in August 2019 that a new anime adaptation is coming for the property to celebrate its fifth anniversary of the Emerald magazine where the property is serialized. Which is amusing since the property began back in 2006 in Ruby and the in-series magazine was Emerald. We had few details about it at the time but now it’s been confirmed as a theatrical project that will land in theaters in February 2020 as an event. It was also revealed that Shuhei Kita is on board to perform the theme song for this project the same as he has for the previous one.

Funimation’s pickup includes the two TV series that were released as well as the two OVAs that were bundled with the manga releases in Japan. The show saw streaming when they premiered on Crunchyroll, which we covered back in the day of 2011.

Viz Media has been releasing the manga through its SubLime Manga imprint since 2015 under the name The World’s Greatest First Love: The Case of Ritsu Onodera.

Check out our review of the previous anime works.

Plot concept: Tired of accusations that family connections got him his current position, Ritsu Onodera quits his job as an editor at his father’s company and transfers to Marukawa Publishing. Once there, he is assigned to the shojo manga editorial department—something he has no interest in and no experience with! Having sworn he’d never fall in love again, the last thing he wants to do is work on love stories. To make matters worse, it turns out that his overbearing boss, Masamune Takano, is actually his first love from high school!
