Freeform Cancels ‘Cloak & Dagger’

2 min read

Cloak and Dagger HeaderWith a strong first season for Cloak & Dagger that introduced the basics, the second season expanded with some solid villains and unexpected characters brought from the comics into it. Sadly, the show is in the crosshairs of a few different issues. With Marvel Television undergoing changes as more of the shows are going to fall under Marvel Studios film division, we’ve seen projects being canceled. Cloak & Dagger has gotten the cancellation and that’s likely part of the reason, which makes their appearance in the upcoming third season of Runaways all the more worthwhile. Sadly, the show didn’t fare well in its second season ratings – a regular problem on Freeform – as it dropped on average 40% from the first season, likely making it an unprofitable project for them.

“We are so proud of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and the trailblazing stories this series told,” Freeform said in a statement to Deadline. “We are also grateful to our incredible talent Oliva Holt and Aubrey Joseph for bringing these beloved characters to life, and showrunner Joe Pokaski for his vision. We’d like to thank our partners at Marvel Television for a wonderful two seasons and are we are hopeful that we can find another project together.”

The cast includes Olivia Holt as Tandy Bowen / Dagger, Aubrey Joseph as Tyrone Johnson / Cloak, Andrea Roth as Melissa Bowen, Gloria Reuben as Adina Johnson, Miles Mussenden as Michael Johnson, Carl Lundstedt as Liam, James Saito as Bernard Sanjo, and J.D. Evermore as Connors.

Plot concept: Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger follows the interracial romance between Tandy Bowen (Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Joseph), two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart — but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.
