While I had read a number of works from DC Comics prior to the 80’s Crisis on Infinite Earth event, it was after the Crisis that I really became a huge fan because I was able to get in on the ground floor of a new era. With so many versions of Superman prior to that which were all pretty contradictory, I fell in love with the re-imagined character under John Byrne, one of my favorite writer/artists of the period from his time on X-Men and Fantastic Four.

DC Comics has now set a July 202 release of a Superman: The Man of Steel omnibus that will be priced at $125 and contain a ton of material from this era that’s largely by Byrne but includes other key pieces as well that helped to support his vision.

  • Man of Steel #1-6
  • Action Comics #584-593
  • Superman #1-11 (by Byrne)
  • Action Comics Annual #1(with artwork by Arthur Adams)
  • Superman Annual #1 (with artwork by Ron Frenz)
  • Adventures of Superman #424-435 (by Marv Wolfman and Jerry Ordway)
  • Adventures of Superman Annual #1 (by Jim Starlin and Dan Jurgens)
  • Legion of Super-Heroes #37-38(by Paul Levitz and Greg LaRocque)
