We learned in late August 2019 that a fourth Matrix film was coming and the casting side is starting to pick up with everything set to film next year. We got the nod recently that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was boarding the project and now it’s been revealed that Neil Patrick Harris is in talks to join the film. Naturally, there’s no indication of who he’ll be playing in the film as there’s very little in regards to how the project itself is going to go.
Mateen was most recently seen in Us as well as Aquaman and he had a great role in Black Mirror. He’ll be appearing in the Watchmen series as Cal Abraham. Casting has also included Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Neil Patrick Harris.
With plans set to begin in 2020 with a premiere date to be set later, it’ll be written and directed by Lana Wachowski with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity.
There’s been a push for this the last few years out of Warner Bros. and it’s no surprise as the original trilogy did $1.6 billion twenty years ago worldwide. The potential now, especially with Keanu Reeves even more popular in many ways, is huge. Additionally, you can see the new WarnerMedia group looking at potential ways to expand film into their streaming service as well that launches next year and I would not be surprised at some sort of TV component, or even possibly a new anime component ala Animatrix.
