What They Say:
Trout’s harrowing adventure comes to an earth-drenching conclusion. A huge tsunami has wiped out Giuseppe’s village and along with it any hope he has of rescuing Trout. But a menagerie of fantastical sea creatures comes to the rescue and help our two heroes battle their past and embrace their future.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
The final installment of the Trout series has landed and I, quite honestly, have nothing to say about it. Having read through the issue from Troy Nixey twice I find myself completely incapable of finding something to truly say about it. I’ve admired Nixey’s illustration style since the first thing of his I read with Vinegar Teeth but the writing and story itself has endlessly lost me. I had hoped with Trout that it might be the book that gave me the “aha!” moment where it all made sense, read a little smoother or something, but that’s just not happening. I dislike dropping a creative talent after just one exposure so I was glad to get this four-issue series to see if I could get into the rhythms of the property.

But I can’t. I just can’t.

In Summary:
The finale for the series is all about family with Giuseppe coming under the sea to find Trout only to get caught up in a sprawling family issue with characters that are almost seemingly shapeless at times. Perhaps there are elements in other books for this property that would make it all make sense. But just in reading Trout I’m left completely incapable of really understanding what’s going on here. I absolutely love Nixey’s art style because it does stand out so much, is so richly detailed and colored, that it really needs to be seen. I just wish the storytelling was something that I could connect with, so just view the grade as an average of fantastic art and impossible to understand storytelling.
