“We Won’t Lose To You”

What They Say:
In a world where magic is everything, Asta and Yuno are both found abandoned at a church on the same day. While Yuno is gifted with exceptional magical powers, Asta is the only one in this world without any. At the age of fifteen, both receive grimoires, magic books that amplify their holder’s magic. Asta’s is a rare Grimoire of Anti-Magic that negates and repels his opponent’s spells. Being opposite but good rivals, Yuno and Asta are ready for the hardest of challenges to achieve their common dream: to be the Wizard King. Giving up is never an option!

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
The end of the previous episode teased a confrontation between Asta and Yuno. Asta cannot believe that Yuno and his other friends from the Golden Dawn are now his enemies. To top it all off, Licht, the leader of the Eye of the Midnight Sun, is hovering above them all. The situation certainly looks dire for our protagonist. Will Asta have to fight his friends? Will he and Yuno finally do battle with each other?

Well, we’re going to have to wait a bit to find out because the episode begins by showing us what certain members of the Black Bulls are doing while all of this is occurring. Yami visits Finral who has finally awakened from his long slumber. He basically gives him the rundown on what’s been happening since he’s been asleep. Elsewhere, Magna is training in hopes of getting stronger. Vanessa is also there with him to provide support…and to drink booze. Lastly, Zora takes captain Mereoleona somewhere safe and wonders if Asta will really come back safely. While it was nice to see what the Black Bulls were up to, what we really wanted to see was the payoff between Asta and Yuno. Though I think starting the episode like this was an ingenious way to heighten our anticipation even more by making us wait.

Eventually, we return to Asta desperately trying to get an answer from Yuno. He keeps yelling his name but he won’t respond. Klaus and Hamon become irritated by Asta and decide to attack him together. Asta manages to fend off their attacks and begs them stop. He doesn’t want to hurt his friends…but they’re not the friends he knew at the moment. Raia comments that Asta should give up but he knows he won’t and that he will die for it. Asta responds by saying that he’s not going to die because he promised his friends that he’ll come back alive. He also proclaims that he won’t let his friends kill his other friends. He WILL survive and he WILL become the Wizard King! Klaus and Hamon are having none of this and unleash another wave of attacks at Asta. Asta doesn’t have enough time to dodge but before the attacks hit their mark he is saved by Yuno!

It appears we won’t be seeing Asta square off against Yuno any time soon. Asta’s words sparked something in Yuno, particularly his proclamation that he will become the Wizard King. The first words that Yuno utters while smiling is that Asta is wrong because HE will become the Wizard King. Asta is mindboggled and asks him if he is really, well, Yuno. Yuno nonchalantly replies that it is indeed him. Naturally, the fact that Yuno is still himself doesn’t sit well with their enemies. They are not amused that he hasn’t fully awakened yet. They attempt to attack Asta once again but Yuno quickly stops them. Klaus and Hamon realize normal attacks will no longer work and decide to unleash their Combination Spell: Le Chateau du Verre. While it does appear to be a powerful spell, Asta and Yuno manage to slice through it together with ease and in the process defeat both of them.

It is at this point that the leader of the Eye of the Midnight Sun finally makes his move. What happens after this I can only describe as one the most beautifully animated fights I have ever had the pleasure of watching. Asta doesn’t even have time to respond as Licht teleports in front of him and snatches one of his anti-magic swords, transforming it into a sword of light. Both Asta and Yuno are forced to back away and fly around in circles in order to avoid Licht’s powerful light attacks. If they even blink for a second they’d be toast. That’s how fast Licht’s attacks are. Yuno manages to restrain him momentarily with his Wind Spirit Binding Magic: Liable Tempest. He instructs Asta to land the finishing blow. Sadly, Asta ends up missing and gets overpowered by Licht’s magic. Asta is sent hurling down to the bottom of a lake while Yuno is forced to battle Licht alone.

Yuno attempts to use his powerful Spirit Storm spell but Licht absorbs it with his Demon-Dweller Sword. Yuno must once again go on the defensive and avoid Licht’s rapid attacks. None of Yuno’s attacks are landing because of Licht’s magic absorbing sword. As they fly higher and higher into the sky, Yuno is desperately trying to find an opening. To Yuno’s credit though, he’s now able to keep up with Licht’s attacks. Suddenly, the first Black Clover opening begins to play in the background and you can just tell that this fight is about to get even more awesome. Yuno finally finds that opening and unleashes his Mana Zone: Spirit Storm spell. At the same time, Asta catapults himself through the surface of the lake and straight into the air to attack in unison with Yuno. Their combined efforts are still not enough as Licht blocks their unison attack with Asta’s sword, which Asta manages to take back. In the closing seconds of the episode, Licht condenses an incredible amount of magic and shoots a massive light beam at the duo. They manage to defend against it but it’s so powerful that it obliterates everything around them as Licht looks down at them from above.

In Summary:
WHAT AN EPISODE! I admit that I was bummed at first when it was clear that Asta and Yuno wouldn’t be fighting each other. But the Asta/Yuno versus Licht fight won me over. It was simply amazing. Everything about it was on point – the animation, fluidity, and OST were all fantastic. I hoped episode #100 would deliver and it did not disappoint. You can tell that everyone that worked on this episode really did their best to make sure that it would be an unforgettable experience for the fans. In my opinion, it was one of the best Black Clover episodes ever and one of the best anime fights this year. Well done! Once again, congratulations to Black Clover on reaching 100 episodes. Will we get 100 more? I guess only time will tell.
