AnimEigo started setting things up for a Megazone 23 Blu-ray Kickstarter some time ago and as they put the finishing touches on their Gunsmith Cats release they’ve now launched the new Kickstarter.

Within its first 24 hours of going live, it’s already closed in on its initial goal of $100,000 – which means lots of stretch goals ahead to pay attention to. As noted previously, two artists from the original team are involved in this set with Gaku Miyao from mecha design and Haruhiko Mikimoto as the designer for Eve in the project.

The sets will include:

  • The complete Megazone 23 saga (Parts I, II and III) with the original Japanese 2.0 and the ADV Films English 5.1 audio tracks. Total runtime: 4h 4m (each is about 80m long).
  • The Megazone 23 Part II International Edition English dub (94m).
  • An assortment of Megazone 23 trailers.
  • The original ADV Films English commentary featuring Matt Greenfield, David Williams and Janice Williams.
  • Multicolored non-SDH and SDH subtitle tracks and SDH captions for the Japanese program, SDH captions for the english program, and multicolored SDH subtitles for the commentary tracks.
  • All backers will be listed on the disc in a special feature and in a 9-panel poster insert in the Amaray case.
  • Expanded Production Artbook containing significantly more content that the Japanese artbook (Premium set only). The Japanese book was about 64 pages, ours will probably end up over 100 pages long.

Stretch goals include:

  • Japanese commentary featuring MIYAO Gaku and our returning champion, SATO Hiroki.
  • Use of MIKIMOTO Haruhiko’s outstanding new Eve painting.
  • New artwork created by Mr. Mikimoto for this edition.
  • 8-page Megazone 23 manga created and illustrated by Mr. Miyao.

Notably, 2015 saw the release in Japan of the Megazone 23 30th Anniversary Edition Box Set which worked off a 4K telecine from the negatives. The Japanese edition brought out the complete series across four Blu-ray discs and included the promotional video, pilot film and the original theatrical notices for it. A 64-page booklet was released as well.

The series last saw release in North America from ADV Films back in summer 2004 when it was released on DVD.

The series was part of our Upgrade This campaign last summer. It was also part of our Ten Best Anime of 1985.

Plot concept: The ultimate virtual reality trip! The world literally unravels for a group of Tokyo teens as they attempt to discover the truth surrounding the death of one of their friends. Everything turns inside out once Shogo gets his hands on a itop secret power bike and is hunted by the authorities. When Shogo turns to his friends for help, they discover a complex web of dark, political intrigue and shocking government cover-ups.
