‘Gintama’ Anime Hulu-Bound

The values of the city of Edo suddenly changed when the aliens, called Amanto, invaded.

It looks like Hulu is beefing up some TV Tokyo content as they’re now listing plans for the first season of Gintama to come to the service. It’s not slotted until an August 30th, 2019 debut but may be part of a larger plan to bring anime from the popular broadcaster overseas where other deals aren’t quite so accessible. No firm episode count is listed just yet and we’ll update in the coming weeks as Hulu gets it into play.

The series comes from the manga by Hideaki Sorachi and began its animated life back in 2006, first with a 201 episode series and then with a new 64 episode series a couple of years ago. Add in numerous specials and a pair of theatrical movies and there is a lot of material for the property and plenty more to adapt as the manga has been ongoing since 2003. There are currently 77 published volumes in Japan as well as five light novels.

Plot concept: The values of the city of Edo suddenly changed when the aliens, called Amanto, invaded. In a world where anything goes, from aliens to motorbikes and even electric trains, a man known as the last samurai clings to his unchanging spirit. His name is Gintoki Sakata, a.k.a. Odd Jobs Gin. He’s reckless and irresponsible, but somehow he does what needs to be done in his own subtle way. The lifestyles of Gin and his companions will make you laugh, make you cry, and warm your heart!
