We got the nod for a third season of Westworld back in May 2018 but knew that it would be 2020 before we saw it because of the scope of it, getting out of the park, and then things got a bit more difficult with the real world side thanks to California fires that burned down a lot of the locations. At SDCC, the third season trailer hit with the theme of the new world and getting out of the park, which is going to upend a lot of things.
“Dystopia can look pretty beautiful in the world. Just because the world is corrupt inside, doesn’t mean it can’t be smothered over and pretty. We wanted to find a version of dystopia that we hadn’t seen before,” said Jonathan Nolan.
The original feature was released in 1973 based on the story by Michael Crichton, who also directed it, which had as its stars Yul Brynner and James Brolin. With it being a Warner Bros. property at this point after being with MGM originally, that makes it easier for HBO to work with.
First Season Concept: The one-hour drama series WESTWORLD (ten episodes) is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin. Set at the intersection of the near future and the reimagined past, it explores a world in which every human appetite, no matter how noble or depraved, can be indulged.
