“Master of the Island”

What They Say:
No shelter, no food, no water… when four girls get shipwrecked on a deserted island, they’re in big trouble! …Or so you’d think, but they’re actually doing great! They don’t have anything, so they’ll make what they need to! They’ll eat what they need to! It’s a deserted island story of intelligence and courage!

Are You Lost hasn’t exactly run away with things just yet but it’s provided for a couple of interesting episodes as we get to see the girls survive. We’re still weak on knowing most of them outside of Homare simply because she’s capable. As we see at the beginning here, she’s considered the master of the island by at least one of the girls because of her basic competence and getting things done thanks to the survivalist training she got from her father. Asuka’s not exactly the right type for this particular adventure even if she admires what Homare is doing and the whining aspect we get out of her is a bit cringey even if understandable considering exactly what’s happened to the foursome.

One of the early focuses with this episode, beyond securing more shelter, is figuring out the edibility of certain foods that they are finding on the island. Asuka finds one thing that she’s excited to try but the test Homare puts it through – which is animated in a hilarious way – proves it to be quite problematic. Also coming into the mix is a bit of hygiene and taking care of oneself so that they don’t get sick and a quick makeshift shower is setup that’s pretty nicely done. Amusingly, it’s pretty much in the open but what a time to just embrace it when you’re one of four people on the island. The show covers a number of interesting little areas, some familiar to be sure, in how to survive. The shower was a bit of ingenuity in design but the starting of the fire with a bit of glass is terribly familiar. And eating insects? Been there.

In Summary:
Are You Lost is providing for some decent entertainment but it feels like it’s just missing a bit in establishing itself more and is taking a bit of time to get some of the basics underway. That said, three episodes is just about an episode and a half of a normal series so it’s covering some familiar territory, it just comes across as more spread out. I do like seeing how Homare is handling things and we get some decent time with Asuka that she gets to stand out a bit more this time around in what’s done and how she interacts with the others, allowing her personality to be a bit more defined. Hopefully, we’ll see some aspects of how freeing this can all be as well as the hardships side along the way,
