Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
The opening installment of She Said Destroy was interesting in that I really liked the large scale it employed while whittling it down to its core pieces and just a few characters to connect with for now. Joe Corallo kept things simple but there’s a good sense of history to it and characters that are accessible but easily expandable. I also really liked what Liana Kangas brought to the page as the designs had a great look about them that definitely clicked and had me wanting more, especially with the style of the settings and even more so with the color design that Rebecca Nalty brought to bear. The whole thing just looked good and read well, leaving me hopeful it can go as big as it seems to have the potential to.

The focus initially on the witch that Brigid’s forces captured and brought before her to interrogate goes about as well as you’d expect as she offers up nothing, going so far as to attempt suicide in order to serve Morrigan. It makes clear the loyalty of those to Fey and how the small number are very much true believers. This frustrates Brigid pretty well because she knows this is exactly how Morrigan operates and that it really will come down to simply overwhelming the witches and this hiding place. When her forces do find out where the witches are, they’re opting for a smaller force to go in and deal with it, making sure that it really is what it seems, but Brigid is intent on throwing everything at them because of the risk of losing it all. It has to be the big play, it has to be definitive and final, and she won’t back down from that.

A good chunk of the book focuses on Winona and Raul as they continue to train after their encounter in the previous issue. There’s some tension there because he knows she’s going to be the stronger one but is holding herself back in practice because it’s Raul. So, when she does she ends up going pretty far and it catches him offguard enough that he reacts poorly. Which isn’t a surprise but both of them kind of react badly here considering what they’re facing. Her sulking does bring her closer to Morrigan in a way as she sees some of the past in the sanctuary and it works well for Raul as he and others face off against Brigid’s forces in the short term, showing what they’re really made of. And it allows Winona to realize a bit more of her own potential as well when she doesn’t hold back against a real enemy.

In Summary:
She Said Destroy has been a really fun and interesting book with a look to it that really drew me in from the first cover. I want to see more of this world as illustrated by Kangas and I’m hoping that Corallo can dig more into the world design in general both in the past and present as it sounds like an intriguing way to operate. This issue pushes the battle forward more with a lot of risk being taken but it fits in with how Brigid is operating, which if Morrigan knows anything, she knows how that goes. I like what we get from the cast as a whole, including the witch at the start, and I can’t wait to see more of it.
