The box office weekend isn’t a normal weekend by any stretch thanks to the 4th of July holiday. The big film that had the longest debut was Spider-Man: Far From Home as it opened on Tuesday. With kids out of school and lots of people on vacation early, it was able to rack up some good numbers from the start. It did $39 million on Tuesday, $27 million on Tuesday, $25 million on Thursday, and then hit the three-day weekend to bring in $32/$34/$27 million for a $93 million three-day and a $185 million six-day. The film had a solid “A” CinemaScore and was 60% male but also 42% over 25, so it was skewing younger which helped.

The film opened internationally earlier in a few big markets but went wide throughout and now stands at a strong $395 million overseas and a worldwide of $580 million. The Chinese debut last weekend was built on well as it’s now at $167 million there.

Once past there, it’s a bit of a drop with Toy Story 4 coming in second with a $34 million three-day take while Yesterday adds another $10 million during the same.

The other film that opened this week was Midsommar on Wednesday but nobody was expecting that A24 horror film to go big. It did $6.5 million over the three-day but pulled in just under $11 million since Wednesday.

Next weekend sees the release of The Cure – Anniversary 1978-2018 Live in Hyde Park on Thursday from Trafalgar Releasing while Friday has Crawl from Paramount going wide along with Stuber from Fox. On the limited side, we get The Art of Self Defense from Bleecker Street, Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable from Entertainment Studios, The Farewell from A24, Sword of Trust from IFC, and also Trespassers from IFC.
