“The High School Girl and the Hair Barrette“

What They Say:
A silent high school girl anime that’s still cute, even if no one talks! This is a story about three girls and their fun high school life, centering around the unfortunate beauty, Momoko, the cool girl with glasses, Shibumi, and the gentle little Mayumi. Fun alone, fun with all. The daily lives of slightly dumb yet cute high school girls.

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
With some meet-cute material in the last couple of episodes, this one focuses on the first meeting of Shibumi within the group. As the obligatory girl with glasses, we see her younger when she observes how Momoko is being so active and not following the rules. That gets her to lash out at everyone else about it, being overly strict but adhering to the rules. We do get to contrast this with some nice time at home where we see her happy and outgoing but it causes trouble because she gets a great hair barrette as a present and that was the exact thing that she was railing against previously, which means there’s some revenge being sought when she wears it to school. It becomes easy to see why she ends up on the outside and why she ends up being befriended by Momoko.

In Summary:
There’s a nice bit of childhood drama and emotion mixed into this episode with what it does and it shows why Momoko and Shibumi are as good a friends as they are as Momoko’s outgoing nature really meant a lot to Shibumi in a time of need. It’s good heartening material overall and just fun to see how this whole young kid stuff is handled without any dialogue within it. It’s definitely an amusing meet-cute when you get down to it.
