The holiday weekend won’t have its final numbers for Monday for awhile yet but the three-day results are pretty good for Aladdin. The latest Disney film hit a $86 million pickup over the weekend with its debut and is expected to cross the $100 million mark easy today, which is where it was pretty much tracking. With the film coming in at $180 million at least, it’s going to need every dollar it can get. The film got an “A” CinemaScore and leaned a bit more women and older to it so it’ll likely have some legs and good word of mouth to it. The film also opened wide around the world except for Japan and that had it adding $121 million there, for a $207 million three-day worldwide debut. Unsurprisingly, China was the biggest market at just under $19 million.
Also new this week was Brightburn which had a $7.5 million debut, which is about on expectations and expected to go up a bit with the fourth-day numbers. While the film got a “C+” CinemaScore, it leaned more male and older and has a huge advantage in that its budget was just $6 million. It did about $4.5 million on the international side this weekend.
Also new this weekend was Booksmart as it opened in 2,500 screens. It did $6.5 million and got a “B+” CinemaScore while leaning heavily female at 79% of the audience.
Of note for other films, John Wick crossed the $100 million market with a $24 million addition while Avengers: Endgame added just under $17 million to bring it to $798 million domestic. The international added another $15 million to bring the worldwide to $2.677 billion – or $111 million behind Avatar. Suffice to say, a concerted push is needed to get it over that particular goal.
Next weekend sees the debut of three films with Godzilla: King of Monsters landing in 4,100 screens from Warner Bros., Ma ariving in 2,750 screens from Universal, and Paramount bringing out Rocketman in 3,500 screens.
