While Disney and Lucasfilm aren’t talking right now, word on the street is that a standalone Knights of the Old Republic film in the Star Wars universe is being put together. The project, based on the very popular game released originally in 2003, has Laeta Kalogridis writing the treatment for it. Kalogridis has a lot of credits to her name, including shepherding the recent Netflix series Altered Carbon.

This project has been high on the request list of fans, more so than any of the spinoffs that have been put together so far, as it focuses on the larger fight between Jedi and Sith from four thousand years prior to where most of what we have is set. It’s a big, sprawling, world that was designed and written about over the years that has a pretty strong slate of personalities that could be utilized in the film from those stories.

Game Concept: In the KOTOR game, the player helps fight an uprising against the Republic led by the villainous Darth Malak, a Sith Lord. The player eventually joins forces with Bastila Shan, a Jedi Knight and one of the most revered women characters in the Star Wars extended universe. The story has Wookiees, droids, the Jedi Academy, and the Force — a wealth of material to be mined.
