The Blade of the Immortal manga series from Hiroaki Samura is getting some new attention recently with a sequel series is about to start titled Blade of the Immortal: Bakumatsu Arc. This one comes from writer Kenji Takigawa and artist Ryu Suenobu with Samura received credit as well. It’s set for the May 26th, 2019 launch in the magazine.
We also learned that an anime adaptation of the original series is in the works and the initial thoughts we had on it was that they were going to try for the complete adaptation approach that’s been in vogue the last few years with some older projects. The Kodansha Japan site is now listing more formally that this new adaptation is a “complete anime adaptation” but it hasn’t formally said if it’s a TV, OVA, or film project yet. With it having thirty volumes of manga, we’re still leaning hard into this being a potentially prestige style TV series.
The series completed in Japan back in 2012 and Dark Horse released the series in full before starting in on omnibus editions.
