Third ‘John Wick’ Film Ends ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Dominance

2 min read
Take a look at the weekend that was and what's coming up next weekend.

It took a few weeks but the Avengers: Endgame film has fallen to second place as John Wick: Parabellum has arrived. It’s been two years since the second film landed where it did a strong $30 million and now the third film has hit with an exceptionally strong $57 million debut, riding high on an “A-” CinemaScore as well. It was expected to be on par with the second film but after strong Thursday previews and the Friday numbers, the estimates kept revising upward and it’s now the third highest Thursday preview for Lionsgate.

When it comes to Avengers: Endgame, the film added another $29.4 million this weekend and with its weekday totals it’s now at $770.8 million domestic. It did another $46.8 million overseas this weekend to bring it to a worldwide total of $2.614 billion. That has it about $173 million away from surpassing Avatar which good money says it ought to be able to do between the domestic and international takes for the next couple of weeks. On the domestic side, it has now surpassed Avatar domestically which was at $761 million. The top domestic film is still The Force Awakens at $937 million.

One of the new films out this weekend didn’t land well with A Dog’s Journey, which pulled in just $8 million – which is $10 million less than A Dog’s Purpose did not that long ago.

Next week has a few things on tap to pay attention to. Wednesday has the debut of The Tomorrow Man from Bleecker Street as it hits four screens while Friday has Disney launching Aladdin into 4,300 screens. United Artists has a solid plan for Booksmart as it lands in 2,300 screens while Sony seeks a darker path with Brightburn landing in 2,600 screens. On the limited side Friday release, Greenwich has Echo in the Canyon documentary while THe Orchard has the Halston documentary. Blue Fox is releasing Funny Story while Oscilloscope Pictures sets The Proposal as their documentary. Finally, FIP is bringing out India’s Most Wanted in 100 screens.
