Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Megumi may have failed to escape from Hirose and the Comrades, but Katsumata tips his hand during a discussion with the weird talking owl. All the comrades know they are searching for the mysterious ‘Acro’s Heart’, but what they don’t know is it will need a vessel. Hirose may be the vessel Katsumata needs, and I don’t feel sorry for Hirose’s eventual fate. I think he is one of the more unlikable characters because he seems so human. On the other hand, he commits horrible acts against humanity without a second thought. Hirose is one seriously creepy dude.
The reporters following Taisuke and the others finally catch up to them. Their bungling makes for some funny moments as the reporters try to hide their identity while traveling with Taisuke, Nami, and Yuta. The whole time they are worried that Taisuke is a killer and may off them next, but any good reporter will risk life and limb to get their story.
This volume is almost as good as previous books with surprising character backgrounds and some character development. Comrade Yura may not be as creepy as Hirose, but every bit as dangerous because of his unpredictability. Yura’s artistic ability and expression is quite surprising. I never would have thought someone so quick to destroy could create beautiful paintings or even remember that he was once a painter. How he paints his comrades reveals a lot about the way he feels about them.
In Summary:
While not as interesting as Yura, it is still nice to see Nami grow as a character. She has always been quick to lash out at those around her, much in the way the Comrades do. Some of Nami’s attitude stems from her critical view of the world, which is not an excuse. She usually makes the logical decision, even if it seems cold-hearted. However, when she is presented with what to her is the normally easy choice of killing a horse to end its misery, she decides to try to rescue it from a bog. This doesn’t seem like anything groundbreaking, but it really is a big turning point in how she views those around her.
