‘Avengers: Endgame’ Maintains Box Office Dominance

2 min read
Pikachu comes close but can't quite close the deal.

While there was some chance that Avengers: Endgame might fall to the second place slot this weekend it managed to eke out a win. The film brought in $63 million domestic to bring it to $723 million. That has it surpassing Black Panther and is now $43 million ahead of Infinity War. All that’s left if Avatar at $760 million and The Force Awakens at $936 million. The film did another $102 million overseas to bring the international side to $1.76 billion and a worldwide total of $2.485 billion. It’s in second place worldwide with just Avatar at $2.788 billion. Can the film do another $300 million?

The main challenger this weekend was Detective Pikachu where it landed with a $58 million debut. With an expected $150 million domestic run at least in the works by the end, the debut is strong in general as it’s the highest for a video game adaptation, a title held by the 2001 Tomb Raider film at $47.7 million. The film nailed an “A-” CinemaScore and that’ll help with it in the coming weeks. The film had a $103 million overseas take this weekend to bring it to $112 million after opening in Japan the week prior. It grabbed $41 million in China while the next highest was the UK at $6.6 million.

Also opening this weekend was The Hustle where it did $13 million and a “B” CinemaScore. It leaned heavily female – 72% women in the audience – and grabbed another $13 million overseas.

Poms from STX grabbed $5.1 million in its debut while Tolkien in more limited for at just 1,495 screens brought in $2.1 million. A lot of the oxygen in the theater market is still being held by Avengers: Endgame since its debut and Pikachu has been the only thing to make a significant dent in it as almost everything is at $6.6 million or under – and under by a lot within the top ten.

Next week has The Third Wife landing on Wednesday while Friday has A Dog’s Journey from Universal in 3,200 screens, John Wick 3 from Lionsgate in 3,600 screens, and The Sun Is Also A Star in 2,100 screens from Warner Bros. The limited releases include Aniara from Magnolia, Meanest Man in Texas from Ammo Content, The Souvenier from A24, Trial by Fire from Roadside Attractions, and The Wandering Soap Opera from Cinema Guild.
