What They Say
With Mikoto and Oriha still at the mercy of Syringe agents, Arashi reluctantly teams up with Chikage, and the two race to rescue their friends. So far, Chisa Yuki has maintained her innocent act in front of the other survivors, but the moment she turns bloodthirsty, Black Label won’t be the only ones who suffer…
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Mikoto is excited to finally find Oriha, but the rest of her teammates are still missing. Her happiness is also short-lived after the civilians Oriha has been keeping safe are tricked into turning on them. The Syringe hideaway among the civilians, Chisa Yuki, has managed to use everyone’s fear to not only revolt against Oriha and Mikoto but to sentence them to death. Fear will make people do just about anything to stay alive.
With the city in chaos and on the brink of becoming a lost cause, it is the diligent detective work of the young Konomi. Where her senior, Tatara, can’t see past his desire to lock up all Black Label, Konomi has a more open mind. Or maybe she is just appreciative of the fact that Black Label rescued her from Kyoji Tobishiro’s twisted torturing?
Either way, Konomi uses the information provided to her by Black Label to convince the police and firefighters that they must be careful when they take on the infected. Specifically, they must target the black-eyed infected. Those black-eyed infected have reached the final stage of the infection and can control the lower stage infected around them.
While the police and fire divisions have the manpower to slow the spread of the infected throughout Tobioka City, the members of Black Label need to regroup. Only they have the skills needed to cut off the head of Syringe. But they remain leaderless as their most powerful teammate, Yuuko remains MIA and assumed captured by the enemy. Should they focus on finding Yuuko before attacking Syringe head-on? Or will infiltrating Syringe’s hideout ultimately lead them to Yuuko?
In Summary
While Black Label has finally determined the masterminds behind the destruction of their city and a method to slowly turn the tide, it is a small act on Arashi’s part that stands out in this volume. His character has been two dimensional with only Mikoto keeping him from losing his humanity and becoming a cold-blooded killer. He is always a coin toss away from becoming no better than those he hunts down. But a simple act of mercy on his part shows he can maintain his “good” self without Mikoto being his conscious. In previous volumes, he never would have let his enemy live. I look forward to watching both Arashi grow as a character and the sexual tension between him and Mikoto.
