Frontier Works Sets New ‘Cat’s Eye’ Compact Blu-ray Anime Releases

2 min read
Cat’s Eye is the most notorious group of art thieves in Japan. No one knows their identities, but for most of Tokyo, the mystery only heightens their allure.

After bringing the show out on Blu-ray back in 2012, Frontier Works is back with a new edition for the Cat’s Eye anime series. The two seasons are being done as “compact” Blu-ray box set releases where they’re going from the six-disc sets of before to reauthored two-disc SDBD sets. Both sets are priced at 24,500 yen and are listed with an August 23rd, 2019 and September 20th, 2019 release date for them. No details are listed at the moment but it’s expected that it’s a stripped down release with no extras or bonus pack-in materials. The 2012 sets were done with a new HD master with digital restoration and those sets were priced at about 31,000 yen when they came out.

The show originally ran for 73 episodes through 1985 and the series was released on DVD in North America through Nozomi Entertainment, who acquired it in summer 2013.

Plot concept: Cat’s Eye is the most notorious group of art thieves in Japan. No one knows their identities, but for most of Tokyo, the mystery only heightens their allure. To bumbling detective Utsumi Toshio, Cat’s Eye is a colossal pain in the neck. They outwit him and the rest of the police at every turn, making them look ridiculous. He would never dream of being in love with someone in Cat’s Eye. Except he already is.
