The Weekly Movies Discussion Post For April 14th, 2019

April is both a good month and a bad month for movies, which makes it easier for me to not really head out to the movies much. Anticipation is riding high for Avengers: Endgame and I had a blast with Shazam! a couple of weeks ago. My interest in Hellboy fell through with its 15% on Rotten Tomatoes though and there’s little else that has me wanting to head to the theater until May when Detective Pikachu is set to delight me. Thankfully, there are things to watch at home with new arrivals and some pickups through sales that I can get to in the coming weeks.

One of them that we’ve got reviewed for this week is The Never Ending Man Hayao Miyazaki, which looks at his retirement and focus on short-film material that lead to him coming back with a new film planned for 2020. That was a delight and I’m looking forward to that review being posted (or has already been posted depending on when you see this). Miyazaki’s works have been a staple of my anime life and I love to discover new pieces and introduce his works to more people.

While I delved into horror the week before, this week had me hitting up something opposite of that, which included a new Netflix film with The Perfect Date. I’m a sucker for teenage rom-com stuff, and rom-com in general, since it was the kind of films I cut my teeth on alongside all the big ’80s action films. This one was a fresh drop that caught my eye since it had Noah Centineo from To All The Boys I Loved Before but it was the inclusion of Camila Mendes from Riverdale that cemented it. it’s pretty standard form material and Mendes has a light role in it but I enjoyed the quirkier nature of Laura Marano as the True Love in it and the kind of dynamic that plays out, as well as the amusing aspect of the escort app that gets made. It’s not great film but it was a perfect Friday night home alone film. These kinds of films are finding a small resurgence on Netflix and I’m continuing to love it.

With the trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker out, that has me hitting up my playlist again of the films though I only took a dip back into Rogue One for now. Every now and then I keep thinking of doing some larger piece of the films in general and individually, but then I just have such a good time watching them that I don’t want to turn too critical of an eye on them. I do with most everything but these films exist in a separate bubble for me and I’m fine with that.

I did get in my copy of Shaun of the Dead, something I’m still surprised I didn’t own, and just had a blast watching it again as I have every time. This week saw a few sale items on iTunes as well to add to my collection with three titles from 2018 that I’m excited to watch soon with Bel Canto and Overlord as well as a rewatch of Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
