“A Slice of Life”

What They Say:
Mysteria Academy is a prestigious magic school that teaches magic without discrimination to the three factions (men, gods, demons), who usually are engaged in battle with each other. Two of the academy’s students are Anne, a princess and honor student, and Grea, a princess born from a dragon and a human.

I long lost my interest in the whole schoo play subplot that gets brought into many school based shows and kind of forced into other areas as well. I liked what they did here the last time around more than usual simply because it did avoid doing much with the play itself and focused on both Anne and Grea and with Grea’s fears in particular. The show continues to keep a pretty good focus on them here and it helps that they’re being so cute and playful with each other at times but also backing it up with more heart than you might expect from something like this. Seeing how Anne helped Grea previously, coming on top of how Grea helped Anne, definitely shows how the bonds are continuing to grow between them.

But a little jealousy will enter the mix as well, such as when Hanna is in Grea’s room for something and Anne discovers this after previously practically begging to see her room. That puts the two on edge for a bit as neither can really see past it for different reasons, creating an amusing little tension. Of course, Anne overreacted by Grea had Hanna come in to help in regards to getting someone to deal with a repair issue in her room. But that doesn’t help as it just makes Anne feel worse and there’s a kind of coolness between the two for a bit as they each retreat in their own way and feel out of sorts because of it. Watching as they both kind of work through this before things “click” in a way with Grea racing to find her in their special spot here Anne has gone ramps up the emotion wonderfully to bring everything together with just how their relationship works.

In Summary:
I really enjoy watching the bond that exists between these two as it feeds into a really romantic way that feels very engaging and interesting compared to what we usually get. It’s moodier than anything else but there’s such “teenage” intensity about it that it’s pretty alluring. The main episode works well to deal with a misunderstanding and how it can spiral out of control when you’re lacking in maturity and context to deal with it and I love the post-credits sequence with Hanna making clear that a great darkness is going to be upon them soon based on how Anne and Grea are interacting as they’ve only scraped the surface of what’s going to happen between the two.
