This… was not a surprise. The CW did a full slate renewal for all their DC series earlier this year so that the productions would have lots of lead time to map things out as the big end of 2019 crossover is going to be Crisis on Infinite Earths. The groundwork was laid for that in the crossover last year and within it there was a key sequence in which we saw Oliver, played by Stephen Amell, set things in motion for him to sacrifice himself instead of the Flash or Supergirl for the larger battle that’s to come. Now, the CW has revealed that the 8th season of Arrow that kicks off in the fall will be its last and it will be ten episodes – leading into the crossover event where he’ll presumably meet his end or some other twist.
This was a difficult decision to come to, but like every hard decision we’ve made for the past seven years, it was with the best interests of Arrow in mind,” Arrow executive producers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Beth Schwartz said in a joint statement.
“We’re heartened by the fact that Arrow has birthed an entire universe of shows that will continue on for many years to come. We’re excited about crafting a conclusion that honors the show, its characters and its legacy and are grateful to all the writers, producers, actors, and — more importantly — the incredible crew that has sustained us and the show for over seven years.”
The series airs on The CW with streaming the day after through their site and app.
The main cast includes Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen / Green Arrow, David Ramsey as John Diggle, Emily Bett Rickards as Felicity Smoak / Overwatch, Echo Kellum as Curtis Holt, Rick Gonzalez as René Ramirez / Wild Dog, Juliana Harkavy as Dinah Drake / Black Canary, Colton Haynes as Roy Harper, Kirk Acevedo as Ricardo Diaz / Dragon, Sea Shimooka as Emiko Queen / Green Arrow, and Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance / Black Siren.
