If there’s a property that I have a hard time keeping up with, it’s Gintama. With stops and starts for the anime over the years and 353 episodes produced so far, which wrapped up in 2018, everything felt like it was coming to a close since the manga was in its final arc. Of course, the manga wrapped up its run in Jump Giga magazine after being in Weekly Shonen Jump forever and has shifted to being an online project in a free Gintama app, so it’ll be going on for as long as Sorachi Hideaki wants to.
Since the thing makes money with lots of merc, that’s not a surprise. And that’s why at the event in Japan this weekend they had the tweet come out from the movie Twitter account in a kind of “well, whatever” approach to the fact that more manga probably means more anime, playing to the laid back aspect of some of the cast.
The series comes from the manga by Hideaki Sorachi and began its animated life back in 2006, first with a 201 episode series and then with a new 64 episode series a couple of years ago. Add in numerous specials and a pair of theatrical movies and there is a lot of material for the property and plenty more to adapt as the manga has been ongoing since 2003. There are currently over seventy published volumes in Japan as well as five light novels.
Plot concept: The values of the city of Edo suddenly changed when the aliens, called Amanto, invaded. In a world where anything goes, from aliens to motorbikes and even electric trains, a man known as the last samurai clings to his unchanging spirit. His name is Gintoki Sakata, a.k.a. Odd Jobs Gin. He’s reckless and irresponsible, but somehow he does what needs to be done in his own subtle way. The lifestyles of Gin and his companions will make you laugh, make you cry, and warm your heart!
