With a limited theatrical run in North America that has picked up about $4 million, Netflix has acquired the rights to the 2019 feature film The Wandering Earth. The project is adapted from The Three Body Problem by Hugo Award winner Liu Cixin and has done big business in China so far since opening on February 5th, 2019. It had a massive $179,892,295 opening weekend and a $559 million take there overall so far, it’s also become the highest-grossing IMAX film released in China at $43.7 million, surpassing Avengers: Infinity War.
The film was directed by Frant Gwo and stars Qu Chuxiao, Li Guangjie, Ng Man-tat, and Zhao Jinmai. Its budget is reportedly $50 million.
Director Frant Gwo said, “This is a movie created for the Chinese audience around the world, and it has been positively received since its premiere, we are very excited about it. To my surprise, this movie also resonates outside Mainland China. Netflix will translate it into 28 languages, enabling more viewers to enjoy it regardless of geographical and linguistic differences.”
Plot Concept: The sun was dying out, people all around the world built giant planet thrusters to move Earth out of its orbit and to sail Earth to a new star system. Yet the 2500 years journey came with unexpected dangers, and in order to save humanity, a group of young people in this age of a wandering Earth came out boldly and fought hard for everyone’s survival.
