And she didn’t promise Yotsuba there wouldn’t be CAKE! Yotsuba doesn’t want a cake as biiiiiig as Jumbo, nope!! You wouldn’t either, now would you?! Ohhh! And then, and then! There ISN’T gonna be a great big festival for the whole town to go to! And Yotsuba isn’t gonna work hard and help out there with Ena and Fuuka, nuh-uh! Not even for candy, nooooo way!
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
After her fun at the ranch, Yotsuba is ready for a whole new set of adventures. Starting with a small chapter in which Yotsuba acts as the “Ranch Man” and ends up following a cat, and a short escapade in which Yotsuba “plays opposites” and ends up eating at a restaurant. Soon, Yotsuba finds herself travelling to Fuuka’s cultural festival in search of cake, and playing at the neighbor’s in the middle of a typhoon. Finally, Yotsuba minds the house and ends up “fusing” with Jumbo in the process, participating in a festival and earning candy, and picking up acorns.
In Summary:
As always, Yotsuba ends up stealing the show here with her wacky antics and unique perception of the world around her. Even when you can take a good guess as to what she’s going to do (such as in the typhoon chapter) it’s still hilarious to watch it come about. The supporting characters also do a good job playing off of Yotsuba well, especially Jumbo, who has a number of great moments in this volume. All the stories here feel solid and contain a number of fantastic gags, with the possible exception of the acorn chapter, which feels a little thin in comparison. Hopefully Yotsuba’s whimsy and charm will continue to be as wonderful as it is here, as this volume certainly makes for an enjoyable read.
