The Review:
Audio:
The audio presentation for this release brings us the original Japanese language track in stereo along with the English language dub, both of which are in the uncompressed PCM form. The show is pretty straightforward when you get down to it as there’s not much outside of dialogue to it and some minor incidental music. The dialogue and the sexytimes are pretty much kept to the center channel without a lot in the way of placement or depth but there’s some movement here and there throughout each of the installments. The dialogue is pretty clean and clear throughout and we didn’t have any problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback.

Video:
Originally released in 2013, the transfer for this OVA series is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.78:1 in 1080p using the AVC codec. Animated by Pink Hunt, the show is kept to a single disc with plenty of room to work with and a pretty solid bit rate throughout. The show is one that plays to the standard designs when it comes to characters and settings where it’s not hugely detailed but everything looks good. This is basically your average looking material when you get down to it and that makes for a solid encode as it uses a lot of solid color fields where we don’t get any blocking or noise, resulting in something that has some really good color definition to it. The high-motion sequences look great and the detail we do get and the backgrounds themselves all hold well. It’s a bright and colorful show that has a lot of appealing moments to it that the encode handles without issue.

Packaging:
The packaging design for this release is definitely appealing as we get the three girls all pressed together as they reach forward for the viewer. It’s heavily shadowed around the edges that give it a really mysterious feeling and maybe a bit darker of a mood than actually exists in the shows but it makes for a great cover. Especially with the neon style logo pieces that we get and the amount of skin showing to accent it all. The back cover gives us a better look at the show with some actual in-show character animation on the sides and shots from the show along the bottom. The summary of the premises is a bit harder to read with purple-edged white text on a purple background but they do cover the three stories and we get a breakdown of the production credits. The technical grid along the bottom handles everything clearly and accurately and there are no show related inserts not a reversible cover included.

Menu:
The menu design for this release surprises me a little as it doesn’t use the front cover artwork like I expected it would. What we get are the pieces from the back cover with our third character added to the mix as they’re all blended together in a row. The logo is kept to the left and the background is done up with lots of pinks and whites, giving it a bright and colorful look overall. It’s a decent looking menu but it doesn’t quite set the mood as I’d think the cover would. The navigation strip along the bottom has the basics that provide for quick and easy setup that works well. It’s a simple but functional and effective menu.

Extras:
None.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Based on stories from the Kakushi Dere manga from Hyocorou that was serialized on Comic Aun, this three-episode OVA was originally released throughout 2013. The 2008 manga was pretty well received and the stories do work a bit better coming from the manga, expanded a touch and with more sexy time with it all. Each of the episodes clock in around twenty-two minutes or so and Kitty Media did them up in bilingual form so fans of both persuasions can enjoy it in their preferred form. The trilogy is one that is only lightly connected by mostly taking place with high-school aged kids and they’re unrelated past that, at least in any serious kind of way, making it easy to drop into any of them and just run with it.

The opening story is a bit of an awkward one as we’re introduced to Nonoka, who is using her classmate Hiroaki to get closer to his older brother Ryutaro. She’s pretending to be interested in Hiroaki and spending time at his place for a bit while Ryutaro is there. When Hiroaki goes off to rent a movie some distance away, this is when Nonoka puts her plan into motion to seduce Ryutaro. It gets really awkward because she demands that he has sex with her, demands that he rapes her, and again leaves you questioning the translation a bit but also just how weirdly defined the phrase is in hentai in Japan. The two do get down to business well enough and there’s some real chemistry there in the couple of times that it happens which in itself is enjoyable. It’s just the trappings that are problematic – you feel a little bad for Hiroaki and Nonoka doesn’t feel like she’s a great person – but the actual scenes are pretty decent.

The second tale is one that plays in the realm of siblings where we get Makoto and Misaki getting together. They’re step-siblings, which means they’re basically like every amateur on PornHub these days, and Misaki has a huge crush on her stepbrother that he’s unaware of. When he discovers that she’s pleasuring herself to the thought of him, well, that unlocks things in a big way. This again plays with familiar trapping that may be problematic for some but the character designs are pretty appealing – purple hair is no green hair but it’s definitely close – and the actual sex scenes themselves are pretty fun. It’s got a good energy about it and the animation is in the middle of the road area but it works for the story.

The finale one is less problematic in some ways as we deal with Taiki, a young man who has some really big fantasies about his crush, Mihashi. Like a lot of teenagers, he has a lot of dreams about her that may make some cringe depending on what you’re trying to get out of this but it gets weird when he ends up trying to find out the truth of a rumor about her and a teacher. The accusatory aspect is problematic since he has no real standing here to be that way and I’m again just cringing at the whole ease of which hentai deals with teacher/student relationships. This again puts us in a place where the actual scenes of intimacy but some of what it leans into prior to that makes it less than engaging unless you can block that off.

In Summary:
The Lust-Struck Trilogy adapts some fun stories from the manga of the same name and that helps to give it more than some of the leaner hentai shows that we get on occasion with paper-thin stories. This really does feel like a bit of an average show in a lot of ways with the animation, stories, and character designs but that’s also good to have because every show isn’t going to be a high-end production – especially with hentai. Kitty Media put together a solid release here with a clean looking encoding, a fun dub that captures things well with its own particular style, and some problematic content at times that at least avoids the darker areas of hentai. It’s not exactly vanilla but it’s pretty close to vanilla when you get down to it.
