What do you do as a studio when your Christmas film hits $1.1 billion in worldwide distribution? You look for spin-off material. And not quite by choice. While there will be an Aquaman sequel, it’s essentially treading water right now as Warner Bros. is hoping to entice James Wan back to direct but nothing has been set for that yet. So what’s a studio to do?
They’re currently entering development with The Trench, which is being designed as a horror-style film that delves into that particular area from the Aquaman movie. Being able to run on a separate development track while leaning into what’s been established means a lot of material is instantly available. The studio has brought on new screenwriters Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald to write it.
The kingdom/inhabitants of The Trench, which did appear in Aquaman, is a recent addition to the DC Comics side of things. It first appeared in 2011 in the Aquaman comics by Geoff Johns under the relaunched New 52 continuity. We also got an appearance in Justice League: Throne of Atlantis‘ animated feature and in the Injustice 2 game.
