When the spy game goes bad for three young women, they find themselves in a world of experimentation.
What They Say
Three female government spies, Yuuki Miyagawa, Reiko Kareyl Yukino and Kana Morishita, are on a mission to find some evidence of illegal medicine manufacturing at a medical company. But someone has tipped off the researchers of the company. The three women are captured and used as guinea pigs by researchers for their new medicine, undergoing experimental surgery that nearly destroys them. Will they be able to escape from the company alive?
The Review:
Audio:
The audio presentation for this release brings us the original Japanese language track in stereo along with the English dub, both of which are encoded at 192kbps. I can’t help but imagine the voice actors keeping a serious face for any of it in either language. There’s hardly anything used throughout for ambient effects or even music though there is a bit here and there as it’s just dialogue upon dialogue with this. Dialogue is clean and clear throughout which is a plus of course and we didn’t have any problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback.
Video:
Originally released in 2006, the transfer for this two part OVA series is presented in its original full frame aspect ratio. The source materials for this look to be problematic as Kitty has done a good job with the bitrates for this as they’re fairly high for an adult title. The main problem comes in the form of the amount of cross coloration that seeps in throughout the episodes, generally in the characters hair. The blonde for example, her hair looks positively alive during most of her scenes as there is a lot of shimmer to the edges there. This is prevalent with most of the women and in a few other areas. Colors, in general, do look good outside of this and the backgrounds have a bit of noise but not so much that it causes any seriously noticeable blocking issues.
Packaging:
Certainly appealing in its own way, the cover design for Project Boobs lets you know exactly what you’re getting into. The logo is amusingly done with a pair of boobs as the o’s in the word, a series of chains is included across the upper area where shots of the other girls are presented and the bulk of the artwork is plain in its approach. Having Yuuki with her costume tearing across her while making sure we see not only her overly large breasts but also some good back end means you know exactly what this show is about. The back cover uses the design from the upper portion of the front with the black background and lots of chains. There’s a section of various shots from the show done as a good collage and the summary is amusingly provocative. The usual elements are here in a rundown of the production information on the Japanese side as well as a solid technical grid that’s accurate. No insert is included nor is there a reversible cover.
Menu:
Utilizing the same layout and artwork as the front cover, albeit with some bright colors and a bit of music, the main menu is a simple static piece that showcases both ends of what the characters are all about here. Big boobs and equally large posteriors. With nothing here but the show itself and some trailers, the menu doesn’t have a lot to deal with but it’s solid in its simplicity and ease of use.
Extras:
None.
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Project Boobs brings about several things that just don’t appeal over the course of the two episodes it runs. Doesn’t appeal is really a polite way of saying it not only bored me to tears but just turned me off completely. Simply put, I’m not the target audience for this kind of material and the presentation as a whole simply came across as lackluster.
The two episodes revolve around a pharmaceutical company which is actually a front for some “cutting edge” scientific experiments for unnamed clients who want the unusual. One of the lead researchers there is someone who came from another company that operated in a similar manner but was shut down by a spy. To his surprise, he’s found her within this company now and has set about creating a trap along with a few other researchers so they can draw her in. While the goal is ostensibly to stop things from being exposed, he’s far more motivated by revenge.
In order to draw in this lead spy, he goes about with capturing her friends first. One by one they fall to his elementary traps and then succumb to his torture techniques. The other researchers, all clad in their simple white lab coats, are all too willing to go along with it. The three women that are captured throughout this are all dealt with in similar ways, and it’s those techniques that make this show exactly what it is. This is a show where the characters don’t really count beyond their looks and it really doesn’t matter what their names are nor what they were sent to deal with. They’re simply subjects to be experimented on.
And oh are they experimented upon. All three women have overly large breasts that are highly unappealing. The blonde for example, when you see her on all fours, you can’t help but figure that one of her breasts weighs as much as the rest of her body. It’s not so much that she’s on all fours but rather on all sixes as the case may be. This is common with all of them as there is a running theme of milking all of them through tight little black outfits that they share. Naturally, one of them is a virgin so she gets deflowered in a violent manner. Another is married so the lead researcher puts her through some extra humiliation. And on and on it goes.
There are some seriously bad moments to be had in here that elevates this from just bad to awful. One is that one of the girls, Kanna, is subjected to an operation whereupon she ends up gaining an additional member on her body. They have a male subject of whom they simply slice his penis off and then attach it to her. Then she’s forced to have vaginal and anal sex with one of her fellow spies. With the poor looking character designs and substandard animation, it comes across as bad on so many levels that you almost want to cringe.
But what seriously takes the cake is when they transplant the brain of one researcher into that of a dog. The dog looks like a weird version of a Brainiac character as he has an oversized half-globe on his head. After they cut your penis off, you might as well become a dog right? That’s hideous enough, but you just know that they’re going to drag him/it in for some sex scenes in order to push the taboos nicely. They do manage to keep it clean in a way as after the first few seconds of showing the dog over the spy, they shift it to a visual of the researcher as he originally was. So you don’t see the dog doing the deed but it’s pretty obvious. It’s like they had the guts to go all the way but then chickened out before following through on it.
In Summary:
Just about everything with this show strikes me the wrong way. The character designs are grossly unappealing, the sex scenes simply aren’t my cup of tea and the animation for all of it is just barely average for an adult series. I don’t expect any serious plotting when it comes to most shows but this isn’t even paper thin in the long run. Add in the video problems and the fact that it has both some problematic characters and implied bestiality and you basically have me almost clawing my eyes out in between checking the run time counter so I can see how much more I have to suffer. The show is likely to have its fans but for me, this is just bad beyond words.
