Chi Meets Julie

What They Say:
Chi is a sweet playful kitten, always full of energy. She gets milk from Yohei, and is relaxing at home, nice and full. As she searches around the house for something exciting, she comes across Yohei walking with a handful of rubber balls. The balls bounce everywhere as he drops them, and Yohei and Chi can’t get more excited. The day ends with Chi and the family making a great memory together.

One of the things about Chi in its first series was that as much exploring as we got to do, the cast never really grew much. We got a few more cats but that was the extent of it. They found a lot of stories to tell within that framework so it made sense but I always wanted a bit more, such as neighbors that popped up from time to time or friends of Yohei’s that would come over. This episode doesn’t exactly correct that but it does bring in Yohei’s cousin, a very outgoing and energetic young girl named Julie. With her coming from the countryside with as farm upbringing, it’s a very different kind of energy that enters the household

Having Chi’s life upended like this is delightful and puts her really off balance since she’s being handled by Julie in ways that the rest of the family doesn’t. Julie and her mother also bring all the smells of the farm with them, which has Chi on edge trying to figure all of that out. It’s little surprise that all of this has Chi trying to find a safe space, which amusingly makes Flutter a target momentarily since Dad’s office is pretty safe. That Chi is basically being like Julie toward Flutter is pretty adorable as well. The show plays well with all of this, especially with some of the things that Julie brings into it, such as the crab and her own kind of playfulness that likes going for some scary gags at times. Ah, farm kids!

In Summary:
The introduction of Julie does a lot to give us something very different to the mix since she has her own way of interacting with animals. Some of it is just not being respectful of the household and their ways but some kids will always struggle with that. It does seem to reinforce the bond between Chi and Yohei a bit as he protects her a lot but he also sees potential new ways to play with her as well, and is willing to give Julie some leeway to explore this. It’s all good fun overall and seeing Chi reacting to so many different things is a lot of fun.
