With the tease of a hot spring the last time around but not quite making it there, the gang makes it there this time and within the first thirty seconds, we get a pretty good montage of activities across it. It’s light and cute without being fast-paced and that made it nicely accessible to enjoy on a basic level since I still couldn’t name a single character here. What it wants to spend most of its time on, unsurprisingly, is the karaoke segment. This dominates the episode as the various groups from the main Side M series get to showcase their talents and that makes for some cute moments – even if the songs are maybe ten to fifteen seconds each.
In Summary:
While I had enjoyed the other cute chibi series from this larger franchise for three seasons, the single season of Side M in this form proved to be far more of a challenge. It simply didn’t connect for me and felt like the pacing and approach didn’t serve the characters well at all to make it accessible to those outside of the show. So it ended up being a very insular/in-joke kind of property and I was left on the outside. It’s got its cute moments and I like the animation and designs but that wasn’t enough to sustain it overall.
