Chi’s Sweet Adventure Episode #50 Anime Review

3 min read

Chi feels empty.

What They Say:
Chi is a sweet playful kitten, always full of energy. She gets milk from Yohei, and is relaxing at home, nice and full. As she searches around the house for something exciting, she comes across Yohei walking with a handful of rubber balls. The balls bounce everywhere as he drops them, and Yohei and Chi can’t get more excited. The day ends with Chi and the family making a great memory together.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
The show gave us a lot of fun – and a lot of tension – the last time around with Chi and Come-Come hunting Blackie before ending up stuck in a trash can for a couple of hours. We’ve seen a lot of good growth for the younger kittens over the course of the run and as we get ready for the finale in the next episode it’s a good reminder that they’re not who they are when they started. Chi has learned so much in how to be a cat that can survive outdoors while Come-Come has managed to make friends and feel something for the place in which he lives rather than just a feral scavenger. It’s small material but it helps to connect us to them and enjoy their stories.

We’ve seen some nice if incremental growth among the human side of the family as well as they’ve been presented as a very good family with little to offend with. Things take a dark turn early on here, however, as Yohei’s working in the living room just as his parents begin to fight. With the music associated with it giving it some added weight, the two go back and forth while Chi tries to play with them and as Yohei hides upstairs. It’s a familiar layer of tension for many but it feels like this it the first time Chi’s actually seen this, leading to her confusion. The whole place feels too quiet to her and her frustration turns into her essentially running away because it’s unhappy there. That leads her to the park for playing with Come-Come and the youthful innocence is in fully display.

`In Summary:
The show spends most of its time on Chi doing her best to forget the emptiness she felt at home and just enjoy playing with Come-Come in the park. It’s a natural reaction for something like this and seeing her lean into it as much as she does fits right, similar to Yohei retreating to his room to study after seeing the fight unfold. So when she makes her way back home, having forgotten what was going on, that emptiness comes back in full force much to her sudden surprise. It’s an interesting way to get ready to close out the series and I like that it does actually tackle some of this material since it’ll resonate with kids very well.
