The spring has come, and as such it’s finally time for Yokai Academy to reopen, and as such time for human boy Tsukune Aono to return to the world of monsters. Things don’t take long to heat up, as soon after reuniting with his friends, he is forced to deal with the effects of a love potion that makes Moka take an aggressive stance towards love (something that Kurumu and Mizore stand idly by and let happen.) And once that mess is sorted out, Tsukune finds himself in the middle of a hunt for a monstrous fruit that can eat him alive.
Things really start to heat up, however, when a new girl shows up at school, saving Tsukune from trouble but drinking his blood in the aftermath. It soon turns out that this young vampire is really Moka’s little sister, Koko… but she’s on a mission to force Moka to fight her seriously. When she finally gets her wish, the fight ends quickly as she was fighting the everyday Moka, not the Inner Moka. At this, Koko breaks down and explains that she hates the Outer Moka because she took her “real” sister away from her when the seal was placed. The volume wraps up as Moka, attempting to win her sister’s love, accompanies Koko on a self-imposed mission to capture the “phantom attackers” that have been terrorizing the campus. Things soon take a turn for the worse, ending the volume on a cliffhanger as Tsukune and Moka are captured by the villains.
In Summary:
The first half of this volume is unfortunately a little on the weak side, as the first two storylines more or less focus on the girls going through the motions of fighting over Tsukune. Both chapters manage to mix things up a little and stay somewhat enjoyable, but they’re both pretty predictable and bland stories. The rest of the book, however, is quite solid, with the introduction of a fun new character in the form of Koko, as well as a mysterious new group of villains. If you enjoyed the first “season,” then don’t hesitate in picking up this solid new volume.
