What They Say
The gambling games continue…and this next game has truly lethal consequences. Will Yumeko be able to figure out its secrets in time to keep from losing her life?

Sayaka has had just about enough of Yumeko Jabami! The student council secretary wants to rid the school of Yumeko’s poisonous influence once and for all, so the president sets the stage for the craziest gamble yet-the enigmatic Tower of Doors! Will Sayaka’s cold logic triumph over Yumeko’s chaos?

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Sayaka is the Secretary of the Student Council and seemingly the only real friend the Student Council President, Kirari, has at school. Although, it might be difficult to call it a friendship as it seems one-sided. Sayaka is so infatuated with Kirari that she loses her icy composure at the beginning of this volume. Sayaka goes ballistic on Yumeko, demanding she is banished from school.

This is a fascinating interaction as Kirari laughs it off, claiming that Yumeko doesn’t have to be expelled. Instead, Kirari could just order the students not to gamble with Yumeko. This seems to strike a nerve as it is the first time we see Yumeko angry. Yumeko doesn’t lash out during Kirari’s diatribe, but she does seem visibly shaken at the idea of not being allowed to gamble. Nothing to this point has seemed to rattle Yumeko, not being in massive debt, not in gambling through a game of Russian Roulette.

The idea of Yumeko continuing at school in any way is too much for Sayaka to handle. Instead, she demands a gambling match against Yumeko with the loser being expelled. All parties agree with Kirari being the judge of the match. This match is so special, that Kirari forbids any spectators and drags Yumeko and Sayaka off to a special tower.

Now Kirari’s obsession with completion and gambling shines as brightly as Yumeko’s obsession with risk. Kirari had a five-story tower built specifically to be a gambling match. This tower has bizarre floors and numerous doors facing out from each floor. Thus, anyone walking through those doors with plummet to the ground below.

Here, Kirari decides to up the ante. After climbing to the top floor with both competitors, Kirari states the loser of the match must throw herself off the top floor. Both agree to this insanity and the match to get to the bottom floor, retrieve a flower and return to the top floor first begins. To open any door in hopes of it leading in the correct direction, the contestant must solve a riddle. The first riddle goes to Yumeko and she fails. Next is Sayaka, and she guesses her riddle correctly and descends a floor.

Not only will one person win this game, but only one person will survive!

In Summary:
With this latest sixth volume of the Kakegurui manga series, we have moved past the end of the first anime season adaptation. I didn’t love the last episode of the anime’s first season as it was blatantly obvious the writers tried to wrap up the show in case it doesn’t receive a second season. Thus, this sixth volume of the manga is all brand new for U.S. fans of Kakegurui. It also provides the reader with the first real glimpse of any character development with glimpses at the Student Council President and her Secretary when they first met and how their relationship began. It seems like a one-sided love affair and it may be the Secretary’s ultimate undoing.

Another fun volume of gambling with the ultimate stake of life or death weighing over the heads of the gamblers!
