The Weekly TV Discussion Post For October 28th, 2018

The fall season has been doing a lot of good things for me with way too many shows that I’m enjoying. But I’m on a weird schedule which means some weeks are off-weeks where I don’t get to check out my regulars. But that lets me sneak in some other stuff to watch, such as where I worked through a trio of very enjoyable episodes of NOVA focusing on the formation of North America in the grand scheme of things. Or soaking up some non-confrontational and enjoyable material with some HGTV shows such as Love it or List it as well as two more episodes of Flip or Flop Atlanta, which is surprisingly appealing in seeing the styles of homes in the area and updates made.

The Walking Dead worked well for me once again though I think I was surprised that there are only two Rick episodes left, which has me really curious to see how strong a narrative they can weave going forward, especially with Negan in the mix. It’ll be interesting to see where it all goes. I also found myself enjoying The Connors more than I expected but I again feel like that this was the direction the whole project should have gone with originally. It was definitely fun to see David in the mix again though I could do without his significant other entirely, regardless of how much I like the actress.

This week had me burning through the rest of I’m Sorry on Netflix and my goodness I loved this show from Andrea Savage. It tickles a particular bone when it comes to sitcom/drama stuff and everyone was delightful, especially actors I hadn’t seen in an age like Martin Mull. I also snuck in a few more episodes of Gypsy, which I still don’t know what to make of but enjoy watching because Naomi Watts kills it. And I really wanted to see what Sophie Cookson was like outside of Kingsman.

The big show for me out of Netflix this week was The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I was highly enthused for this series since it was announced as I absolutely adore the modern comics for it. Netflix was totally the right approach and while I’ve only watched two episodes I’m in love. Shipka was perfect back on Mad Men in a way that was unnerving and getting her in something lighter in a way, more outgoing and engaging, it’s proven to be a delightful experience. I love the cast, the design, and getting to see a favorite of mine with Richard Coyle from Coupling surfacing again.

I also started doing some dips in the older sitcom world as part of my daytime playlist that runs in the background when I’m not randomly playing a Marvel or Star Wars film. I picked up the first season of New Girl on the cheap and am reminded that it was a weak season that lasted mostly on Zooey Deschanel’s exuberance. Once the rest of the cast got better solidified it came together well and I hate losing that show in the past year.

I also went much further back in two ways. First, I decided to throw the first season of Friends on in the background and that was something that worked better than I expected. Such naive times, such nostalgia. The other that I only partially started was the 1986 series Sledge Hammer. It’s pure nostalgia that does not age well at all but it was like a weird version of Naked Gun at the time and I have such fond memories of it even if it really grates against modern issues.
