Warner Bros. had earlier this week set a release date of February 7th, 2020 for the now formally listed Birds of Prey film. The film hasn’t had a lot of detail at the moment beyond Cathy Yan directing it and Margot Robbie reprising her role of Harley Quinn. The shortlists of actors for other roles have been bouncing around for a bit but now some confirmations are rolling in. Mary Elizabeth Winstead has taken on the role of Huntress while Jurnee Smollett-Bell will take on Black Canary.
According to Deadline, “In the movie, Huntress is a former mafia princess, who like Batman, saw her family killed at a young age, hence why she became a vigilante.” The character has had a few incarnations over the years in animation and live-action, including a brief stint in Arrow where we also have a Black Canary character.
The Birds of Prey team has varied over the years to some degree, but the one that has been the most defined and sought after involves the team put together by Writer Gail Simone, which included Oracle/Babara Gordon, Black Canary/Dinah Lance and Huntress. There’ve been more over the years and different levels of participation amongst the members but it’s long been a fan favorite. Check out the full group history here
